“Antigua & Barbuda, which has requested $3.4 billion in compensation from the U.S. after winning a WTO dispute over Internet gambling, most likely will have to settle for a much smaller amount according to John Jackson, an international economics law expert and professor at Georgetown University Law Center.

CariCom Supports Antigua over WTO Dispute with USA (Antigua)

“The 28-nation Caribbean Community and Common Market, CariCom, has announced they fully support member Antigua and Barbuda in efforts against the United States to end the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) that prevents offshore Internet gambling companies from taking US customers.

WTO: Costa Rica To Seek Compensation From US On Online Gambling Policy

“Costa Rica will join World Trade Organization (WTO) members: European Union (EU), Antigua & Barbuda, India and Japan in seeking compensation from the United States, according to reports on Point-Spreads, relating to Washington’s removal of online gambling and online poker from its trade obligations, after the WTO repeatedly ruled that Washington’s ban on remote Internet gambling violates WTO trade agreements that the United States signed.

When the U.S. lost its final appeal March 2007 the United States Trade Representative’s office (USTR) announced that it would take the unprecedented legal step of changing the international commitments it made as part of the 1994 General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS) agreement amongst the 150 members of the WTO…”

WTO: Antigua Sun – President Bush Aware of UIGEA Dispute

“Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer raised the country’s Internet dispute with the United States at during the meeting between Caricom leaders and President George W. Bush.

Prime Minister Spencer spoke of Antigua & Barbuda’s desire to settle the matter with the United States over the Internet Gaming dispute which the country has won at every stage at the WTO.

It was also pointed out to President Bush that by today Antigua & Barbuda will make application to the Dispute Settlement Body of the World Trade Organisation for certain remedies because of the US non-compliance with its ruling.

PM Spencer noted that President Bush said he was aware of the details of the dispute but was pleased that the matter was raised and pledged to look into the matter in an effort to reach a resolution…”

Legal: Japan & India Join WTO Claims Against USA- is US Poker Bluffing?

“Japan and India have joined the EU and Antigua in filing a compensation request with the World Trade Organization (WTO) resulting from Washington’s attempt to change the details of its obligations under the 1994 General Agreement on Trade in Services to remove online gambling and online poker.

The European Union first notified the WTO on Tuesday regarding their claim, followed by the tiny Caribbean nation of Antigua and Barbuda on Wednesday, with Antigua seeking compensation of $3.44 billion against the United States…”
